What is permitted?

Cornerstone Energy Park is permitted by the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) to release specific chemicals into the air. The following list provides links to information by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Center for Disease Control Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) on the sources of emissions, potential health effects, and health protective guideline values for each chemical.

  • Many of these chemicals may be permitted for release into the air from a variety of sources, including both natural processes and human activities.

  • Just because a permitted chemical can cause health effects under some exposure scenarios does not mean it poses a human health risk. Risk depends on how much, how often, and how long someone is exposed.

  • LDEQ and EPA use the air permitting regulatory process to set emission and ambient air standards that are protective of human health and minimize emissions.

Additionally, the LDEQ operates an air monitoring network around Louisiana to track air quality trends and determine compliance with the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS), which include criteria pollutants such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and particulate matter.

  • The NAAQS are health-based standards designed to provide public health protection, including for “sensitive” populations like asthmatics, children, and the elderly.

  • Details on the LDEQ program and regional air monitoring site locations are available here.
